Quick Guide to Buying a Wall Bed

If you're thinking about a wall bed, you're probably wondering whether it will fit and where to start. (Click any of the links in red to give you more information)

The good news is that I can often give you a pretty good idea over the phone or by email.

Here's the information that helps me most.

Will It Fit?

As a general guide, a wall bed without side cabinets requires approximately:

Bed Size Wall Width Room Depth
Single1200–1300mm2100mm
King1400–1500mm21000mm
Double1500–1600mm2200mm
Queen1700–1800mm2300mm

If you're adding wardrobes, shelving or cupboards, you'll simply need additional wall space.

A quick note regarding skirting boards. If you home has large skirting boards (150mm+ in height for example)  these may need cutting into by the installers which will incur extra installation costs. This is especially relevant in older homes.

How Will You Use the Room?

Tell me whether the room is for:

  • Everyday sleeping
  • Guests
  • A home office
  • An Airbnb
  • A holiday home

Do You Want More Than Just a Bed?

Many customers choose to include:

  • Wardrobes
  • Shelving
  • Cupboards
  • Drawers
  • Desks

The answer often changes the best design.

Planning everything together usually creates a better-looking room and makes better use of the available space.

Wall Bed Finishes

Having a wall bed in your home is similar to having a cupboard in a room that has a bed concealed in out. The most popular colour we install is white melamine. There are a whole host of colours and finishes available for the cabinetry that could match your existing colour scheme and decor. Ask me about this should it be a consideration.

Do You Need Installation?

In Victoria we provide an installation service that we can quote on for you depending on where you are located. If you’re interstate most handymen or cabinet maker or carpenter could install the bed for you. If you are handy yourself you could install the wall bed as we provide full instructions. You will need two people.

The wall bed is and surrounding cabinetry are delivered as flatpacks and as a  tailgate delivery. This means its delivered as close as possible to your location but you’ll need to organise unpacking the contents and taking it into your home.

Most apartments we install wall beds into will require a site visit before installation to assess access points such as elevators and stairwells.
