What Is The Cheapest Wall Bed You Can Buy?

We all know that wall beds are a great answer to reclaiming space back in a guest room or home office and we have many options to choose from. You may not know that we provide wall beds in flat packs when you want the wall bed but no cabinetry or cupboards surrounding the wall and you want it delivered promptly.

We had an inquiry from a guy in Melbourne that wanted a wall bed for his mate who was coming for a visit from Queensland. He had a small converted garage but no bed and hardly any room. A single wall bed that he could install was the perfect answer for him. It was delivered within about a week and took him a few hours to install as he was quite the handyman.

Small Budget, No Room Or Time – The Perfect Wall Bed

Our NeXt bed can be screwed into the wall or floor so this style of installation does suit apartments and smaller homes quite well especially when you cant use the wall frame or studs/noggins.

1. The Next bed wall bed is spring loaded and lasts a life time. Spring loaded systems are more reliable than hydraulic/gas type systems. These work similar to the boot of your car and eventually wear out or break through use. The springs in the NeXt bed are so strong that they will last you until you no longer need the bed and even if there was an issue the springs are easy (and cheap) to replace.
2. At a later date , if it suits, you can get a carpenter to build an enclosure around your wall bed if you find it necessary. Its only the size of your average wardrobe so it won’t break the bank. We have even installed wall beds into wardrobe spaces. The wardrobe needs to be big enough obviously.
3. The Next bed is easy to use and simple in operation. You don’t need huge muscles to lower the wall bed or raise it and the legs fold out automatically making the whole process efficient for anybody.
4. The mattress and bedding is “tied” to the bed so no sheets, blankets or quilt fall off when the bed is raised. In most cases (if the size is right) you can use your own mattress. We do supply high quality mattresses at a reasonable rate if you need one. These mattresses come flat packed as well.
5. If you order a wall bed you could probably receive it about 7 days after your payment is made in most postcodes around Australia. Please allow a bit more time if you’re in an isolated part of the country.

One of the most popular questions I get asked is:

What is the difference between a Murphy Bed and a Wall Bed?

In Australia its easy – any type of wall bed is a Murphy and wall bed and Murphy bed are interchangeable. I don’t think I’ve ever met an Aussie who knows the difference.

In the USA its a slightly different scenario where:

1. Murphy Beds are often wall beds with a spring mechanism (like the beds we sell) and a metal frame to hold the mattress.
2. A wall bed might refer to a piston lifting mechanism (similar to the gas rods that lift the boot of your car) and in most cases would have a wooden frame.

In Australia wooden framed wall beds are rare in fact we did a Google search and couldn’t find any suppliers in the country that sold full wooden framed wall beds. There is a good reason for this and that is shelf life. Our spring system and metal frame will last a long time without replacing any parts where as the piston/gas rod systems will need the rods replacing at some stage after normal use. We did find a wall bed company that produced a piston system but with a combination of metal frames and wood.

So where do the name Murphy Bed come from?

Murphy beds where invented by William Lawrence Murphy who lived in a small one room studio (or bedsit). In those days it was a scandal to have a woman you weren’t married to in the bedroom so Murphy came up with the idea of hiding the bed away when he had female friends come and visit. He developed a steel, spring loaded contraption that has evolved over many years to the efficient, well-designed product it is today.

There were other wall beds on the market but these weren’t counter balanced and easy to open and close. Murphy never trademark the name “Murphy Bed” so it’s now in common use through out the world.

As I mentioned in Australia we deal with the spring loaded, metal frame wall bed as its the least expensive and more durable type of wall bed. Our wall beds are cost competitive , designed in the USA. We have checked the competition out and their wall beds are quite pricey and are often imported from Italy.

In most cases a client will come to us with a problem . They lack space such as in an apartment or don’t want to waste space having a permanent bed in a guest or spare room. They first think sofa bed or fold out bed but quickly come to the conclusion that a wall bed is a better more permanent solution.

A wall bed is far sturdier and long lasting than most fold out beds or sofa beds from our experience.

Here are 5 questions answered that we get regularly asked.

Question#1: Do You Have A Show Room?

In this day and age having a retail showroom is expensive with leases, utilities, and staff and this cost will be passed on to customers. If you look at any of our competitors around Melbourne with showrooms you will see they charge almost double for a comparable product. We understand clients want to see before they buy and that’s why we have a comprehensive website with plenty of examples. Our website is our show room without charging you extra. The wall beds we endorse have been selling in Australia for over 30 years and it was our top sales manager Leigh Robinson who first imported them in from the USA all those years ago.

Question#2: How Much Room Do They Take Up?

A basic wall bed without cabinetry is similar to a wardrobe and will extend out from a wall about 400mm. If you had a wall bed against a wall you wouldn’t even guess there is a bed in it whether it was vertical or horizontal. From an aesthetic point of view this will not impinge on the interior design or layout of any room much at all. If you choose the library bed, studio bed (with desk) or side cabinetry or book shelves then more room is required but it never looks out of place or cumbersome. You still get your floor space back.

Question#3: Quality & A Good Night Sleep?

Our wall bed quality is based on the mechanism and structure which is one of the best you can buy anywhere in the world. The mechanism is sturdy, strong, guaranteed and feels like a normal bed. This is the most important aspect of the wall bed – it’s a REAL bed that simply folds away. Question#4: Can We Organise Installation Ourselves?

We have many builders and home renovators that are quite capable of installing the wall beds themselves and we provide instructions. We do advise you will need some cabinetry experience or similar and the installation will require two people. The only bed we don’t advise installing yourself and can’t supply you with is the library bed as this requires extra expertise. If you want our high quality side cabinetry with book shelves or cupboards these are available in flat packs and can also be delivered to you.

Question#5: Can We Match Our Existing Decor?

We can match most existing interior design elements but some cabinetry colours or finishes will cost extra (but not that much in the big scheme of things.) Our most popular standard colour is white but check out our full colour range here.

WALL BEDS – SPACE ORGANISATION

We have been delivering and installing wall beds (or murphy beds)  across Victoria for the past 20 years. That’s a lot of installations.

This has given us the opportunity and experience to engage in a multitude of challenging installs.

Our murphy beds installers are professional cabinet makers and on other days can be found installing, kitchens, walk in wardrobes and room dividers.

Remembering with a wall bed installation you can have book shelves and cabinetry on the sides of the wall bed increasing its usefulness. You can even order a desk accessory or library shelves that take things one step further.

This brings us nicely into our other services. Namely room dividers. (We do install walk in wardrobes as well but that’s a other story for a different day)

We often get asked how well our room dividers stop the noise. Our room dividers are 6.8mm thick (the glass version) and we have had no noise complaints yet. The room divider I’m referring to here has a white translucent laminate on glass; it not only reduces noise but gives you privacy with natural light. Wow all of that in a simple room divider.

In the last 6 months here are 7 most popular questions we get asked by clients.

1. How Good Are Our Wall Beds? – Our wall beds are top of the range. One of the key concerns with a wall bed is the mechanism that allows the wall bed to be used without issues. The cheaper wall beds don’t have a spring loaded mechanism and are difficult to manage. Your wall bed choice must be sturdy and last so don’t penny pinch on such an important investment as this will back fire on you.
2.  Can I install the bed myself? Yes, you can and we do provide instructions and you can get Uncle Ernie to help as you will need two people but we don’t advise this at all. Our installers are qualified cabinet makers and are expert at this type of work. Quick and efficient, in and out, job done professionally is what we recommend – for yours and our peace of mind.
3. How long will it take? We are working at a 6 week lead time currently from the bed being delivered to installation. COVID 19 has delayed everyone but we are working as fast as we can to accomodate everyone.
4. Which is the right bed for me? This is based on installation – whether it will be mounted to stud work (Alpha Bed) or to the skirting/floor (Next Bed). If you’re in an apartment then the Next bed will probably suit but in a normal home then the Alpha bed will work best.
5. Alpha/Next – What other differences are there?  With the Alpha bed you have shelf and cupboard access on either side of the bed all the time but with the Next bed you don’t (when the bed is in use.)
6. Can you do special requests? Most of the time we can extend shelving or manipulate cabinetry to a certain degree as I mentioned our installers are qualified cabinet makers so can come up with solution to suit. We get many requests from people with unconventional homes and weird spaces.  The best thing to do is of course discuss all your installation requirements with Leigh Robinson. (Don’t forget we also have a walk in wardrobe division if you’re completely redesign any bedroom space?)
7. Can we use our own mattress? Our wall beds fit most standard mattress sizes the key here is the thickness. If your existing mattress is too thick it won’t work properly so you may need to buy one from us or get one locally. Our mattresses are incredibly comfortable and well made but its up to you.
